Website, automation, or AI?

The right answer is usually less about what is new and more about where your work is getting stuck. This is how I separate the choices before recommending a scope.

Written by Brandon Boyd of Boyd Intelligence, an independent studio in Riverside, California. This is studio guidance—not an independent ranking.

Start with the constraint, not the label.

01

New website

Choose this when the offer needs a clear public home: a new structure, useful pages, and a coherent way for people to understand what happens next.

02

Website redesign

Choose this when the underlying business and message are working, but the current presentation, content hierarchy, or conversion path no longer reflects them.

03

Rules-based automation

Choose this when the work follows defined steps. It can reduce repetitive handling without asking a model to interpret uncertain or sensitive material.

04

Custom AI

Choose this when a focused workflow benefits from working with language, varied inputs, or agreed source material—and when human review and operating costs are understood.

Match the purchase to the job.

Website packages

Essential / Professional / Advanced

Website packages are $3,000, $4,000, and $5,000. Advanced includes a scoped custom AI feature or workflow within a flagship website project.

Standalone custom AI

One focused workflow

Standalone custom AI work starts at $4,999. It is assessed and scoped around the workflow itself; it is not simply an add-on price for a website.

Ask what holds up after launch.

  • Can they explain the scope in plain language, including what is not included?
  • How will they plan for search engines and AI-powered answers? Ask about technical SEO, useful content, and AEO—not guaranteed rankings. See the Boyd Intelligence approach.
  • Can they show relevant completed work, explain their own role, and share client references with permission? Separate illustrative concepts from delivered projects.
  • What evidence will be used to make design or workflow decisions—and who decides when evidence is incomplete?
  • What limitations exist in the proposed approach, especially around content, inputs, integrations, or model behavior?
  • What needs ongoing attention after launch: content, access, third-party software, model use, hosting, or internal ownership?
  • Who will actually do the work, and who will you speak with when a decision needs to be made?

A few direct answers.

How do I know if I need a new website or a redesign?

A redesign can make sense when the offer, audience, and content structure are sound but the presentation is not doing them justice. A new website is more appropriate when the message, page system, or underlying structure needs to be reconsidered.

When is rules-based automation a better fit than AI?

When the inputs, routing, and decisions can be written clearly in advance. Rules-based automation is often easier to inspect and maintain for stable, repetitive processes. AI becomes worth assessing when the work requires interpreting language or varied source material.

Can a website project include an AI feature?

Yes. The Advanced website package is $5,000 and includes a scoped custom AI feature or workflow as part of the website project. A standalone custom AI tool begins at $4,999; the scopes are different and should not be treated as interchangeable.

Is this an independent product ranking?

No. This is studio guidance written by Brandon Boyd for buyers considering work with Boyd Intelligence. It is meant to make the tradeoffs legible, not to rank providers or platforms.
